2008 SPEED World Challenge Touring Car
|
|
Tuesday July 22, 2008 |
|
The BimmerWorld SPEED World Challenge Touring Car team unloaded their rapid BMW E90's at Mid-Ohio with dreams of repeating their 2007 win at the Lexington, Ohio track firmly in mind. The three-car team would leave Mid-Ohio without that win, but have high hopes for their cars to be able to show their true competitive form at the remaining rounds.
"Certainly none of the teams are sitting still, including us," said team owner/driver James Clay. "We not only managed to repair the cars after Watkins but also upgraded the suspension design and got some testing in. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to close the gap. The other teams also sped up a bit through the weekend – that is probably the toughest part. We're in a position where all of our new developments are put immediately on the track and make us faster, but watching some of the other cars conjure a couple of seconds when they need it is not a trick we are capable of at this point." Seth Thomas wrings all of the available speed from his E90 on the way to 6th place.
In a race that saw two of the three BimmerWorld cars slowed by contact from overaggressive competitors, Seth Thomas was the only driver to reach the finish line unimpeded. "I gave it all I had and my E90 was on the limit the entire race. 6th place would make some drivers happy, but we know we're ready to win. I feel bad for James and Nick—Nick especially seems to be a target this year."
Esayian, not accustomed to biting his tongue, thought the problem was best left to the SCCA to correct. "I've been in this series for a long time and I know driving standards can fluctuate. I've been on the wrong side of few accidents over the years, but now that we all have the in-car cameras the series mandated, maybe they can tighten the reins on some of the out of control behavior this year. I'd love to finish a race for a change without any dents on my car!"
One of the toughest challenges faced by the series sanctioning body, SCCA Pro Racing, is determining the competitive balance between so many different types of cars. For a team like BimmerWorld, taking the fight to factory teams like Acura and Mazda is something the team works at tirelessly between races. Clay is confident his team has been putting in the effort to be successful.
"Certainly we have the consistency down, although we could use a little luck. On the overall speed side, I think our E90 cars are incredibly well developed and at this point very fast cars and in the driver's seat, the consistency in the data is evident as well. There's nothing left to give—we're flat out on every lap of every race. At some point, someone in tech will hopefully realize we haven't been sandbagging for three years, and will adjust the specification of our cars so they can compete at the front more than occasionally." Nick Esayian withstood intense pressure (and a few bumps) on his way to the checkered flag at Mid-Ohio.
With the BimmerWorld trio of Thomas, Clay, and Esayian now 6th, 9th, and 11th in the driver's points, the BMW E90's pilots are focused on scoring podium finishes and victories to close out the 2008 season. Thomas is aiming for the top step of the podium. "A win is all I'm honing in on right now. We've been fast, we've been on the podium, but winning is what we live for these days."

2008 British Touring Car Championship

Team RAC head to Oulton Park next Sunday (27 July) for round seven of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship looking to build on another successful weekend at Snetterton.
In Colin Turkington, Team RAC boast the in-form driver in the BTCC. A string of podium finishes since Thruxton in May has seen the 26-year-old muscle his way into the Overall Driver championship hunt.
Stephen Jelley continues to show his promise in the championship with only contact from Fabrizio Giovanardi and Matt Neal at Snetterton denying the Leicester-born driver points finishes in races one and two.
Colin Turkington lies fifth in the BTCC Driver Standings, a solitary point behind Mat Jackson and 11 points behind Jason Plato, while Stephen Jelley is 15th with seven points. Team RAC head the Independents Team Standings with 202 points.
Dick Bennetts, WSR Team Principal, commented: We are all looking forward to the weekend and some good racing at Oulton Park. It is a track where we have had success in the past.
The guys in the workshop have done a superb car in preparing cars that have been extremely reliable and we are heading to Cheshire with the aim of securing more valuable points for Team RAC.
Colin Turkington said: The last few rounds have been great for both the team and on a personal level. The team worked tirelessly to secure a podium finish at Snetterton a result I'm not too sure many people outside of our garage expected.
I did well in qualifying at Oulton Park last year and secured a victory so the team has every right to go into the weekend with optimism.
Stephen Jelley added: Oulton Park is my favourite track. I cant say why, but it just is! It is a circuit where I have always scored well in the past. The fans are always great in the North West and have a real enthusiasm and knowledge of motorsport.
I am feeling more and more comfortable in the BMW320si. We've got a great car and I am really looking forward to next weekend as are the entire team.
RAC will continue its season long promotion to win a BMW. Fans can go online at teamrac.co.uk for a chance to win a car and a host of other top prizes. (Team RAC Gallery)

2008 SPEED World Challenge Touring Car

Heading into round seven of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car season this weekend at Mid-Ohio, the three-car BimmerWorld team is hoping for a repeat of their fortunes from 2007.
With the team on the cusp of success, team owner and driver James Clay made the bold decision to step out of the seat for two rounds to focus on optimizing all areas of the team's BMW E90's. That move would help the team in the short-term, but would also set into motion improvements that have had a big effect in 2008.
"Certainly the team's first World Challenge win was a major stepping stone," Clay said. "Unfortunately I didn't race a car that weekend and Seth had a mechanical issue, so I think it was a little bittersweet for both of us. #37 charging to victory
"Watching the win from the sidelines was tough, but as a team owner, it was the right choice and the team progressed due to the time I put in when I wasn't behind the wheel. We operate on a whole different level now since that weekend, and more importantly, throughout 2008. Once you get the taste of the win, nothing else is a substitute and the whole team is obsessed with earning more."
Clay's time out of the saddle was also used to work with his BimmerWorld technicians and partners to improve the robustness of their E90's. "I really think last year the team was set to win races but we still battled reliability due to the required parts for the car. This year, the reliability is much improved due to the Xtrac transmissions and some additional work we have done over the winter. Joey Hand On the Podium

I've been running this site since 2000. I'd really like to see just a bit of support from the members or even visitors from this site. I've never had a donation, or sold a photo here, and something like that would be awesome. I do a lot of work here, and it's a one man team. I had a small crew helping me for a bit, but that's long gone. I'm not going anywhere, but I'd like to see just a bit of support from you all, even if you can just throw $5.00 my way, that would be awesome - just a show of support, and I can do bigger and better things here.
I think I helped groovera yesterday with a $10.00 donation, I'm just a guest. My co-worker donated to a VW site a while ago, just because.
As soon as I receive one, I'll make a new page of all donating members, and work on some type of incentive thing...you know?
Registration here is free...and so is your own photo gallery.
Thanks :)

Hey guys - just hoping you all can help with a small donation to my favorite music site - actually, one of the sites that I listen to when I push a whole whack of updates here on the site, and do a lot of backend work, photos, and fixes - I'm not asking for much, but I just sent a $10.00 donation there, and if anybody else does too, I will give half of my profit from my Google Ad's to Groovera if at least 5 people put $10.00 for a donation to them. They did not ask me to do this, but I feel it's in my best interest to keep that site alive.

BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK, Birmingham, AL (July 16, 2008) -- Turner Motorsport M3s are back in action this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. The H&R Springs BMWs have done well on the 2.3-mile track with podium finishes in 2005 and 2007 and two top-five finishes in 2006. The team is also coming off a second-place finish two weekends ago at Watkins Glen Raceway. Everyone on the team is looking to move one step up the podium this weekend in a race that will be televised on The Speed Channel, July 26 at 2:00pm ET. (check out some pic's)
Bryan Ortiz and Don Salama scored the top spot in qualifying two weekends ago at Watkins Glen in the #97 H&R Springs/Nova Derm/OCG/GoToPuertoRico.com BMW M3. But their teammates Matt Alhadeff and Bill Auberlen grabbed second place at the checkered flag with the #96 Motul Lubricants/StopTech Brakes BMW M3. Ortiz was hit from behind during the early stages and knocked out of the race.
Will Turner, team owner: "Both M3s have had all of the ingredients in place except for the good luck. It's been the things out of our control that have crept up on is -- the #97 M3 taken out in the last race and both cars were stuck behind the pace car at Mosport. We had it all in place at Watkins Glen and it showed with the pole and the second-place. We're going to do everything we can to put both cars in contention for the win here on Saturday."
Turner continues, “In the past we have done very well here. Don Salama and I finished second here last year. Bill Auberlen was on the podium in 2005. The circuit suits the BMWs well and our StopTech Brakes and H&R Springs give us an edge that we hope to exploit. We want to take it all the way!”
The Speed Channel will be televising this race on Saturday, July 26 at 2:00pm ET - set your TiVO’s!
Joining the team for this weekend are two sponsors aimed at every enthusiast – Allshocks.com and Allsprings.com. They represent retail outlets for Bilstein Shock Absorbers and H&R Springs, respectively. They join an already powerful combination of sponsors and technical partners that provide championship-winning support at each race – H&R Springs, StopTech Brakes, Borla Exhaust, Pagid Racing, Motul Lubricants, and Piloti Driving Shoes.
This weekend's schedule has Practice and Qualifying on Friday with the 250-mile endurance race on Saturday afternoon. This weekend will be just for the Koni Challenge GS cars with the ST class taking a break. The full series will resume together for the following round at Iowa Speedway in August.

2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge

ORLANDO, Fla. – Whether it’s testing, traveling or packing all of the racing possible into one weekend, Automatic Racing’s six drivers stay busy, and their schedules have never been more hectic.
As the team prepares for round five of the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, the pilots of Automatic’s three BMW M3s are at the top of their game.
Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal co-drove the No. 09 Automatic Racing Imported Car Store/Rogue Engineering/LandAir/Engine Music Studios BMW M3 to a third-place podium finish at Watkins Glen, but before he could drink too much celebratory champagne, Thornton was on a plane to Russia for business.
Now that Thornton is Stateside once again, it’s Segal who has a busy schedule. In addition to his duties behind the wheel of the 09 car, Segal will also be driving a Mazda RX-8 in the Grand-Am Rolex Series race this weekend.
Perhaps no one on the team will have a more chaotic three days than Charlie Putman and Charles Espenlaub, who are also driving in two races. The big difference, though, is that they will be racing at two different tracks. They will drive the No. 91 Automatic M3 at Barber and squeeze in some World Challenge competition at Mid-Ohio.
Putman and Espenlaub will fly to Mid-Ohio Wednesday, then test Thursday and fly to Barber that night. On Friday, they will practice and qualify for Automatic before flying back to Mid-Ohio. They will qualify there Saturday morning, then arrive at Barber just in time for the race. After the checkered flag, they get on yet another plane to compete in Ohio on Sunday morning.
Rob Finlay and Steve Cameron finished in the top ten at Watkins Glen, but they have their sights aimed at the podium, so they took advantage of the short break between races to test the No. 99 Mobile-Shop.com Automatic Racing M3.
Finlay, Cameron and the Automatic crew traveled straight from upstate New York to South Carolina to get some laps in around Carolina Motorsports Park. They worked to achieve a comfortable setup for both drivers, and tested various spring combinations and brake packages.
“Joe Varde did a great job working through different scenarios, and now going to the races we have a better idea which direction to go as we fine-tune the car for each track,” commented Cameron.
By 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, Automatic Racing’s six drivers will have only one thing on their agenda: to win the 250 mile KONI Challenge Grand Sport race. Keep up with Automatic Racing at www.AutomaticRacing.com.

2008 British Touring Car Championship

BMW Dealer Team UK driver Mat Jackson finally celebrated in style this afternoon as he claimed his second overall win of the year in the closing race of the weekend at the British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton circuit, Norfolk.
Up until race three, the Accident Exchange-backed driver had endured a frustrating weekend, which started with a high-speed off in free practice yesterday and a disappointing result in race one. However Jackson waved goodbye to his bad luck as the result of the reverse grid put his ballast-free BMW320si on P2.
As the lights went out Jackson executed a strong start and was the first driver into turn one ahead of Steven Kane. Jackson was to hold the field at bay as he reeled off a succession of first class laps keeping the door firmly shut on a determined Kane who applied the pressure on the race leader for the duration of the 18-lap race. As the pressure mounted on the penultimate lap Jackson experienced some understeer and he momentarily got out of shape at the exit of Sears. However, it was not enough to deprive him of his lead and he regained his composure and went on to claim his second outright win of the season and his fifth Independents’ victory.
Earlier in the day, Jackson started race two from 15th on the grid and by lap six he was looking to move up into the points as he challenged Mike Jordan for tenth place. He finally passed him on lap 11 as they approached the Esses. The safety car was deployed on lap 13 for two laps at which point Jackson was running in ninth after overtaking Adam Jones. Second placed Gordon Shedden went wide on lap 17 and rejoined the pack in front of Jackson who he duly overtook on the start-finish straight claiming seventh place and three valuable points.
Jackson started the first race of the day from an unlucky 13th on the grid and as the BTCC field made its way around the 1.9-mile track Jackson initially lost one place as the cars jostled for position. The safety car was deployed for six laps. Jackson regained a place when the race recommenced, moving up to 13th behind Mike Jordan. As the pace intensified a new lap record was set and Jackson took up a watching brief behind Matt Neal as the pair battled for 11th. On lap 16, the 26-year-old executed a clean pass past Neal on the approach to the Esses, however Neal was determined not to be denied the place and lunged down the inside of Jackson pushing him wide onto the grass. A lap later Jackson once again went wide at the Esses sustaining front-end damage and ultimately finished in 15th place.
As a result of today’s racing Jackson now lies in fourth place in the overall championship with 122 points.
Jackson commented: “When I went into the barriers yesterday after five laps I really didn’t think we would come away with a win, it really is a great testament to the team and all their hard work. The third race was a tough one but it was a much needed win and a great boost for the team as a couple have slipped the net.”
Team Principal Chris Tee commented, “That was a hard weekend and the team worked exceptionally well, it was a great team effort. Mat put in a good consistent drive in the final race despite the continual pressure from Kane. The win seemed a long time coming but it was well worth the wait.”

BMW Dealer Team UK qualified in 13th place today for the sixth meeting of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton circuit, Norfolk.
Earlier in the day, Accident Exchange-backed Mat Jackson suffered a high-speed off in his BMW 320si at Coram after coolant fluid was dropped on the track. His session was brought to an early close as the 26-year-old returned to the pits. The team repaired the car in time for the second free practice.
Later in the day, the BTCC field took to the 1.95-mile track for the 30 minute qualifying session. Jackson, who was carrying 36 kilos of success ballast, set his time of 1.12.444 in the first part of the session. Qualifying was red flagged and the Henley-in-Arden-based driver was unable to improve on his time in the remaining 11 minutes.
Jackson commented, “That was a difficult qualifying session, the circuit seemed to lose a bit of grip as the day progressed which ultimately hampered my lap times. However, looking ahead it should make for an exciting first race tomorrow.”
Team Principal Chris Tee commented, “We lost some valuable track time this morning but the team did a good job to get the car back out for the second session. It was also a shame that qualifying was red-flagged as we were on our second run. It was close, had we been three tenths quicker we would have gained five places! ”
Race one for the British Touring Car Championship is at 11.10 with race two and three at 13.45 and 17.40 respectively.

BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) set the sixth-fastest time in qualifying for the 11th round of the 2008 FIA World Touring Car Championship. The three-time world champion lapped Portugal’s “Circuito do Estoril” in 1:47.724 minutes. This meant Priaulx finished 0.399 seconds behind Chevrolet driver Nicola Larini (IT), who claimed pole position. BMW Team Germany’s Augusto Farfus (BR) drove his BMW 320si WTCC to seventh, setting a personal best time of 1:47.756 minutes. He will start the first of the two sprint races from the fourth row, directly behind his fellow BMW driver, Priaulx.
The BMW Team Italy-Spain driver pairing, Félix Porteiro (ES) and Alessandro Zanardi (IT), secured 12th and 16th respectively for the first half of the season’s final round. Farfus’ team-mate, Jörg Müller (DE), failed to improve his time on his final run shortly before the end of the 30-minute session and had to make do with 13th.
Priaulx was satisfied with his qualifying result, after he hadn’t made it into the top-six in the morning’s two practice sessions. “This was the best my car could do today,” said the Guernsey-born racing driver. “The car was good, our strategy was good. Despite the rather difficult start to the weekend our team didn’t lose its calm and just continued working hard. I shall push hard tomorrow to bring this weekend and the first half the season to a successful end.”
Farfus, however, had hoped for a more successful qualifying, following promising results in practice. “We didn’t expect to be that far away from pole position,” he commented. “But our rivals succeeded in improving considerably over the course of the weekend. Conditions were good out there, and we obviously have a good chance to add some points to our tally. However, I had hoped for more today.”
Spectators at the 4.140-kilometre track were treated with a true showdown in the dying stages of qualifying. Up to five minutes before the end almost the entire field waited in the pit lane, in order to find the perfect timing for the final attempt. When the pack finally went out, one improvement followed after another. Priaulx, Farfus and Porteiro were among the long list of drivers who set their fastest lap times in the final seconds of the session.
